Toilet paper gel vs foam

Toilet paper gel and toilet paper foam do the same job: you put a small amount on dry toilet paper so it cleans like a wet wipe, then flush the paper as normal. The difference is texture. A gel is a thicker liquid that sits on the paper as a slick layer, while a foam is mixed with air at the pump and soaks into the paper within a couple of seconds. Which one suits you comes down to feel, dosing and how much paper you like to use.

What each product is

Both are cosmetic cleansers for personal care, used with ordinary toilet paper. Neither is a wipe, and neither should leave anything in the toilet except paper.

A toilet paper gel usually comes in a squeeze tube or a pump bottle. You put a small dab on folded paper and wipe. Because a gel is thicker, it tends to stay on the surface of the paper rather than soaking all the way through.

A toilet paper foam comes in a foaming pump bottle. The pump mixes the liquid with air and puts a measured dome of foam on the paper. The foam breaks down as the paper absorbs it, leaving the paper evenly damp. Foamie Gentle Toilet Paper Foam is this type.

How they compare in use

These are general differences between the two formats. Individual products vary, so read the directions on whichever one you buy.

  • Texture: gel feels slippery and cool on the paper. Foam feels light, and the paper ends up soft and damp rather than slick.
  • Dosing: a squeeze tube depends on how hard you squeeze. A foaming pump gives roughly the same amount every press.
  • Absorption: gel tends to sit on top of the paper. Foam soaks in within a couple of seconds.
  • Paper strength: a small, even amount of moisture keeps folded paper in one piece. Too much of either can make paper tear, so less is more.
  • Mess: a dab of gel can slide off thin paper if you overdo it. Foam stays where you put it.

Which one feels more like a wet wipe?

A wet wipe is a sheet that is evenly damp all the way through. Foam gets closer to that, because it spreads through the folded paper as it absorbs, so the whole pad is lightly damp. A gel gives more of a slick patch in the middle of the paper.

Some people prefer the gel feel, especially if they like a more noticeable layer of product. Others find it leaves a slippery feeling and prefer the drier finish of a foam. If you have only tried one, it is worth trying the other before deciding the category isn't for you.

Ingredients and fragrance

Gels and foams are both mostly water. Gels typically add a thickener to give them body. Foams use a gentle surfactant that whips up into foam at the pump, often with a humectant such as glycerine. Both need a preservative so the bottle stays good once opened, and some include fragrance.

For a real example, Foamie Gentle Toilet Paper Foam lists Aqua, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Glycerine, Parfum, Panthenol, Citric Acid, Benzyl Alcohol and Dehydroacetic Acid. It is scented with mānuka, cedar and fig. Whatever you choose, read the full ingredient list, and stop using any product that irritates. Our fragrance free toilet paper foam guide covers what to look for if you prefer no scent.

Cost per use

Bottle prices don't tell you much on their own, because sizes and doses differ. Work out the cost per use instead: the price divided by the number of doses in the bottle.

For Foamie, a 60 ml bottle is NZ$19.95 and gives roughly 400 pumps, which is about 5 cents a use. A foaming pump also makes the count predictable, since one press is one dose. With a squeeze tube, the number of uses depends on how much each person squeezes out.

How to choose

Choose a gel if you like a noticeable slick layer and don't mind a little more care with how much you use. Choose a foam if you want the paper to feel evenly damp, like a wipe, with the same dose every time, which also makes it easier for kids and visitors to get right.

Both keep wet wipes out of your pipes, which is what NZ utilities ask for. If you want to try the foam side, Foamie Gentle Toilet Paper Foam is on the product page, with a sign-up to hear when stock is back if it has sold out. Questions people ask

Is toilet paper gel flushable? +

The gel itself is a small amount of liquid on the paper. What you flush is the toilet paper, which is one of the three things NZ utilities say belong in the toilet.

Do you need more toilet paper with gel or foam? +

Neither should need more than you use now. Folding three or four sheets into a pad gives the product something to sit on or soak into and keeps the paper in one piece.

Which is better for kids, gel or foam? +

A foaming pump is usually easier for children, because one press gives the same amount each time and they can see where the foam has landed. A squeeze tube is easier to overdo.

Can I use gel or foam with recycled toilet paper? +

Yes, though thinner papers tear more easily when damp. Use a little less product and fold an extra sheet if your paper is on the thin side.
