How to choose the best toilet paper foam in NZ

The best toilet paper foam is the one with a clear ingredient list, a pump that gives an even dose, a cost per use you are happy with, and a scent (or no scent) that suits you. Brand rankings date quickly and depend on taste, so this guide gives you the checklist instead. Run any bottle sold in New Zealand through it and you will know whether it is worth buying.

1. A full ingredient list you can actually read

A cosmetic product sold in New Zealand should list its ingredients on the label. Look for the full list, usually written with international ingredient names, rather than a few highlighted extras on the front.

Toilet paper foams are mostly water, with a mild surfactant to make the foam, often a humectant such as glycerine to keep the paper soft, and a preservative system so the bottle stays good once opened. If a product won't tell you what is in it, skip it.

As an example of what a full list looks like, Foamie Gentle Toilet Paper Foam lists Aqua, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Glycerine, Parfum, Panthenol, Citric Acid, Benzyl Alcohol and Dehydroacetic Acid.

2. Honest claims on the label

Toilet paper foam is a cleanser, not a medicine. Be cautious of a cosmetic product that promises to treat or cure anything. A sensible label tells you what the product is, how to use it, and the usual warnings: external use only, avoid the eyes, keep out of reach of children, and stop using it if irritation occurs.

The same goes for anything flushed. The paper is what goes down the toilet, and that is what utilities such as Watercare say belongs there, along with pee and poo.

3. A pump that gives a consistent dose

A good foaming pump gives roughly the same amount every press, so one press is one dose. That matters more than it sounds. Too little and the paper stays dry, too much and it goes soggy and tears.

Check the directions say how many pumps to use. Foamie's are one pump onto three or four folded sheets, then about two seconds for the foam to soak in.

4. Cost per use, not price per bottle

Divide the price by the number of doses in the bottle. If the label doesn't say how many uses it holds, that is worth noticing.

For comparison, a 60 ml bottle of Foamie is NZ$19.95 and gives roughly 400 pumps, which is about 5 cents a use. That is around 90 days for one adult, or four to six weeks for a household sharing a bottle. Our wet wipes cost per year guide shows how that compares with wipes.

5. Fragrance, or none

Scent is personal. Some people like a light fragrance in the bathroom, others want none at all. If you prefer fragrance free, check the ingredient list for parfum or fragrance rather than relying on words like natural or gentle.

Foamie's current formula is scented with mānuka, cedar and fig. Our fragrance free toilet paper foam guide covers what to look for if you would rather go without.

6. Where it comes from and how fast it arrives

A product sent from within New Zealand by NZ Post usually arrives in a day or a few days. Imports can take weeks, and you have less to go on if something goes wrong.

Foamie is blended, filled and labelled in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and sent from Auckland. Shipping is free nationwide on orders over $25. Under that, standard delivery is $4.99 to Auckland metro, $5.99 elsewhere in New Zealand and $8.99 to rural delivery addresses, and Australian orders are a flat NZ$25, tracked.

Questions people ask

Is toilet paper foam better than wet wipes? +

For your pipes, yes, because you only flush toilet paper. Wipes are designed to hold together when wet, and NZ utilities ask people to bin them rather than flush them.

How long should a bottle of toilet paper foam last? +

It depends on the size and dose. A 60 ml bottle of Foamie gives roughly 400 pumps, which is about 90 days for one adult or four to six weeks for a household.

Is foam or gel better? +

They do the same job with a different texture. Foam soaks into the paper and gives a consistent dose from the pump, while gel sits on the paper as a slicker layer. Our gel vs foam guide compares them.

Should I patch test a new toilet paper foam? +

If you tend to react to new cosmetic products, it is sensible to try a small amount first, and to stop using any product that irritates.
